Mabel was born July 16, 1931 on the family farm south of Ratcliffe. She was the sixth child born to Walter and Clara Casler and a sister for Clifford, Ira, Harold, Lloyd and Laura. Her dad called her his sweet little Peggy Jane and the name stuck with her down through the years.
Her sister, LaVine came along when Peggy was two and they became partners in crime, shyness and everything else.
She first attended school at Norge- her and LaVine riding the horse back and forth. Hense grew Peggy’s great love for horses.
They moved to Ratcliffe in 1940 and she attended school there before moving to Weyburn in 1944. Here she attended school at Weyburn and Tagg School.
Peggy worked at Woolworth’s then the Ratcliffe Café while Kenneth Lohse patiently “waited for her to grow up” (his words). She married Kenneth on October 14, 1949. They farmed in the Ratcliffe area for many years. They raised five children- three sons, Laverne, Wade and Adrian and two daughters, Shiela and Judy.
Peggy was active in the Ratcliffe Sewing Circle, Ratcliffe Ladies Auxillary, and the Royal Purple. She enjoyed sports days, especially ball-playing first base- at Foster’s Grove- now Oungre Memorial Park. Peggy enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening and family. She really loved her home in Weyburn and if you played crib you had to play a game.
In 1997, Peggy spent five and a half months in the Plains Hospital with Pancreatitis. In 2003 she started dialysis and in 2008 she had a heart attack which necessitated her move to Estevan where her daughter could look after her. Her health steadily deteriorated and on October 8, 2010 she quietly ended her struggle and went home.
Peggy is predeceased by her parents Walter and Clara Casler; Her husband Kenneth; family members Laura and Seb Heisler, Clifford and Vina Casler, Harold Casler, Delrose Casler, Lloyd Casler, Ira Casler, Dan Rivard, Lily and Wilfred Peterson, Lloyd Lohse, Julian Lohse and Eldon Lohse.
