Oct. 15, 1922 – August 22, 2020
Rose Schultz (nee Schäfer) was the first born child of Joseph & Christina Schäfer in Landau, a German colony in what was then known as the Russian Ukraine. She was the oldest of 4 siblings: Joseph, Lydia, Johannes, Theresa. Due to Communist oppression, the family fled Ukraine in 1929 and arrived in Holdfast, Sask. on a cold and bleak April day in 1930. Life was very difficult for the family during the depression, especially after Rose’s father died in Jan. 1933. Rose began a teaching career in 1940, riding a bicycle 5 miles to and from the school each day, earning $600 in her first year.
In 1945 Rose met Ted Schultz. She said, “I was the little schoolteacher boarding at his sister’s home – he was the brave soldier home from the wars”. They married in Sept. 1947 and began cattle ranching near Goodsoil, Sask. Rose taught in nearby one room schools. In 1950 they sold the ranch and bought a farm near Virden, Man. After farming rocks for 3 years and being “frozen out, drowned out, and hailed out”, they moved to Weyburn where both began careers as Registered Psychiatric Nurses at Saskatchewan Hospital Weyburn. Rose worked as a ward supervisor, community therapist and music therapist. In 1965 she returned to her first love, teaching children at St. Dominic Savio School. The following years were full of memorable students, time with family and friends, at the cottage on Echo Lake, annual holidays, international travel, active involvement in music, arts & culture and caring for her grandsons. Rose was a lifelong learner and teacher, avid gardener, gourmet cook, hostess of dinner parties, very involved in church, choir and community, volunteering extensively after her retirement from teaching Dec.1984. Rose’s strong faith in God and Jesus Christ as her Saviour brought her through almost 98 years of love, laughter, toil and trouble with determination, a smile, a song.
Rose was predeceased by her husband, Ted Schultz in 1994; parents, Joseph & Christina Schäfer; brothers, Joseph & Johannes Schäfer; brothers-in-law, Jim McMurdo and Sam Hewitt; granddaughter, Kim Kosmynka.
