Agnes was born on July 4, 1931 in Dacono, CO to Jack and Ruth Parsons. She had two older sisters, Virgie and Ida and two younger brothers, Charlie and Gilbert. The family moved frequently but finally settled in Commerce City, CO. Agnes graduated from Adams City High School in 1949. She was able to pursue her higher education goals as she provided care to her ailing mother.
Agnes married her soulmate Floyd Chinn on October 26, 1952. They moved into their new home on Forest Drive in Commerce City shortly after marriage and raised two loving children, Larry and Cindy. They faithfully attended all of their children’s activities which included Larry’s baseball, basketball and football games as well as Cindy’s piano and tap dancing recitals. On weekends the family was often found on Jackson Lake where Agnes was an avid water skier. Agnes and Floyd loved to square dance together and belonged to a local square dance club. Every fall they went to Greeley to watch the Bronco’s practice and were especially fond of “Big John”, John Elway. Agnes also had a playful side. There was always a summer water fight with the neighbors or a gag played on a friend.
She was a sports fan, following many sports but was a Colorado Rockies super fan. She watched every game and knew every player’s name and position. The night before she passed, the Rockies game was on the television, Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer and the Rockies won, we’re sure she had a hand in that!
She loved to decorate cakes of all kinds for all holidays and occasions. She made every kind of cake imaginable from wedding cakes to cake walk cakes for the junior high school carnival. Agnes was also passionate about crocheting. She loved making afghans. Agnes made baby booties, blankets and layettes for every newborn in the family.
Agnes worked for the Defense Finance and Accounting Service for 35 years in retirement pay and benefits. She finally retired and after a year decided retirement wasn’t for her and went back to work at the Commerce City Ace Hardware. She worked there for 27 years in the accounting department and retired in March of 2015.
While she never had grandchildren, she had grand-dogs and she loved them all. She even adopted the neighbors bulldog Boots as her own. There was Fritz, Fletcher, Mariah, Rosie, Monty, Bailey, Ferguson, Lacy, Sam, Maggie, Brody, Elvis Woodsworth, Beauregard and Blitz. She was definitely a “dog person”.
She had an affinity for earrings. She collected them from all over the world and had over 400 pairs. She had earrings for every holiday and never left home without a pair on. She even wore them to the Silver Sneakers Water Aerobics class she attended at the local recreation center.
She was the kind of friend a friend would like to have. Many friends were life-long friends, her high school pal Lucille, her babysitter Detta, her church friends the Heitmans, her co-worker Millie and too many others to list. She was a “doer”, always ready to lend a hand or comfort a friend. She was the epitome of “to have a friend, you have to be a friend”. She was THAT friend.
The last year of her life was a struggle, though she lived it with grace, courage and a little sass.
Agnes is survived by her brother and sister-in-love, Gilbert and Norma Parsons, son and daughter-in-love Larry and Mary Chinn, daughter and son-in-love Jim and Cindy Kobos, great nephew Brian Allen and husband Kevin Patrick, many nieces and nephews and grand-dogs: Bailey, Brody, Beauregard and Blitz.
