Albert McKinley Madsen was born on January 16, 1928 as the 5th child of Jacob McKinley Madsen and Goldie Bell Arnold Madsen. He was born at home on the family farm near Kirk, Colorado. He enjoyed remembering his childhood with all the farm duties, animals, family gatherings, and neighborhood farms. He always said times were hard but they shared what they had.
Albert married Lois Mary Ann Crites in 1948. He is survived by his younger brother Harold Madsen; four children, Charlotte (Terry) Quarton, Darrell McKinley Madsen, Richard Madsen, and Randall (Sandra) Madsen; and has eight grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Albert was always in the gasoline business starting with a partnership with his best friend and brother-in-law, Lawrence Crites. They tried their hand at running a gas station and auto repair shop in the late 1940’s. Albert and Lois then moved to Denver to find steadier employment. Albert worked for 38 years in the petroleum business, retiring from Amoco Oil as a gasoline transport driver. As a sideline career, he started the Athmar Decorating Service that did exterior and interior painting for 30 years which all the family helped with. He helped build three homes with his sons and was always available for any of the family projects.
In retirement, Al and his son Randy restored a 1930 and a 1931 Model A Ford. Al and Lois enjoyed driving the cars around town, in parades, and touring. They traveled around the country in their travel trailer, went on cruises, and enjoyed square dancing. They visited the Scandinavian countries and Frederikshavn, Denmark where Albert’s grandparents lived before coming to America. Albert and Lois had 56 years together to enjoy their family, grandchildren, and friends.
Al enjoyed woodworking, wood carving, and church activities, especially driving the Family Promise bus. After Lois passed, he remodeled their Wheat Ridge home, living there for 9 years and for the last 2 ½ years has lived at Lincoln Meadows Senior Living.
A Celebration of Life for Albert will be held Thursday, July 27, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary's Pavilion of Reflection, 7777 W. 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. A reception will follow in Crown Hill's Heritage Hall.
