Alix Virginia Neville Arthur passed away peacefully at age 95 on April 17, 2024 at Cherrelyn HealthCare Center in Littleton, Colorado. She was born November 4, 1928 to Homer and Alice Neville in Kansas City, Missouri and was raised in Shawnee Mission, Kansas with her sister Nancy Neville Glick. Homer was a founding partner in the architectural firm of Neville Sharp & Simon. Alice’s family, the Dockings, were active in Kansas banking and politics.
Alix is survived by her four children – daughter Allison A. Brittsan, sons Paul N. Arthur, Stephen S. (Patricia) Arthur, and Robert A. (Catherine) Arthur, and five grandchildren Melanie (Todd) Bennett, Matthew (Lauren) Brittsan, Scott Arthur, Amanda (Anthony) Milano, and Brandon Arthur. Also, six great grandchildren Jack and Laine Bennett, Charlotte and Georgia Brittsan, and Oliver and Sophia Milano.
While studying journalism at the University of Kansas, she met her husband Jack “Bud” Arthur, also of Kansas City, Missouri. They were married June 27, 1951. Alix had the opportunity to spend a semester studying journalism in California where she fell in love with Santa Barbara but returned to Kansas City to complete her formal education and marry her college sweetheart. Alix’s graduating class was also the first to walk through a campanile or bell tower honoring university faculty and staff who died during World War II. The Campanile is also notable in that it was designed by her father.
Jack completed two years of military service in Germany where Alix gave birth to their daughter. The growing family relocated to Kansas City where three sons were born, and they opened a drug store. After a family vacation to Colorado in 1963, they relocated in 1964. Alix made Colorado her home and spent the remainder of her life there. Alix raised her family and worked part time at Arthur Pharmacy until 1983 when the family business closed. Afterward, Alix took classes at the Metropolitan State University at Denver where she reinvented herself and became a travel agent. Traveling was one of her biggest passions that led her to destinations across the world including Egypt, China, Scotland, Norway, France and the United Kingdom.
Alix was active in the choir and edited the weekly bulletin at two churches - Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian and Wheat Ridge Presbyterian. During this time, she also made two lifelong friends - Ann Schmidt and Carolyn Linsenmayer, whom she met while active with the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. Alix also loved and appreciated the arts, especially live theatre and musicals. Some of her favorites included Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon. She knew the soundtrack for each by heart and enjoyed singing along during each performance well into her golden years. She also took an active role in politics and served as a delegate in Jefferson County and later at the State of Colorado in Pueblo during the 2012 presidential campaign.
Alix always saw the best in others and had a lifelong passion for reading and excellence in writing. She also had a love for the Colorado mountains, especially the town of Breckenridge.
Memorial services are pending. Her family has requested that donations be made in her name to the Jefferson County Library Foundation:
