Aurora Benita "Dorie" Espinoza passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 30, 2026, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 95. Born on March 21, 1931, in Vigil, Colorado, and raised in Valdez, Dorie lived a long life centered on faith, family, friendship, and caring for others. She was the daughter of Jose and Cleotilde Espinoza and grew up alongside her brothers Frank, Reuben, and Joe. After attending elementary school in Vigil and graduating from Primero High School, she continued her education at Trinidad Junior College.
Dorie spent much of her career serving the community as a Supervisor for Human Services for the City of Denver. While she was proud of many things, one accomplishment stood out to her: purchasing her own home as a single woman in the 1960s. At a time when that was far less common, it reflected the independence, determination, and strength that defined her throughout her life.
Although Dorie never married and had no children of her own, family was always at the center of her world. She loved her parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and later generations with all her heart. She played a special role in helping care for Lance and Charmaine when they were young and remained deeply invested in the lives of all her nieces, nephews, and their children. She was especially close to her nephew Joey, who visited her faithfully for decades, helping with projects around the house, bringing groceries, sharing dinners, and celebrating holidays together. Their bond began when Joey was born and remained strong throughout her entire life.
Anyone who knew Dorie knew how much she loved being around people. Family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, barbecues, and visits from friends brought her tremendous joy. She was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and lived her faith through her love and devotion to both God and family. She enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Mexico, and California, loved spending time outdoors and fishing—even though she never cared much for eating the fish she caught. She also enjoyed bingo, trips up the hill to play the slot machines, cheering on the Denver Broncos, and offering plenty of opinions whenever they had a rough game. She was equally fond of a good glass of wine or a cold margarita, which some would jokingly say was the secret to her long life.
What people will remember most about Dorie is the way she made them feel. She was kind, funny, generous, and loving. She had an incredible memory and seemed to carry the history of the entire family in her mind. She could recall names, dates, stories, and connections that no one else remembered. Conversations with Dorie always left you smiling, laughing, or learning something new about your family. Her laugh was infectious, her pizzelles at Christmas were legendary, and her door was always open. She spent her life putting others first, caring for family members through both joyful and difficult times, and making sure everyone stayed connected. She would want to be remembered as a warm, giving person who loved deeply and cared for those around her—and that is exactly how she will be remembered.
Dorie was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Cleotilde Espinoza, and her brothers Frank and Reuben Espinoza. She is survived by her brother Joe Espinoza; nieces Charmaine and Nadine; nephews Ronnie, Joey, and Lance; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and cherished family and friends Roseanne, Rosalee, Shirley, Mardelle, Marie, Mrs. Delgado, and many others whose lives she touched.
A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held Friday June 12, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4380 Utica Street, Denver, Colorado 80212. The Rosary will begin at 9:20 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. and a reception at 11:00 a.m. Graveside interment will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery, 7777 West 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, Colorado 80033.
Dorie leaves behind a family that is stronger because of her love, countless memories that will continue to be shared for generations, and a reminder that a life well lived is measured not by what you have, but by the people whose lives you make better.
