Education always played an important role in Barbara's life. This was illustrated by her determination to complete college at Millersville University while raising daughter Laura. Barbara earned a bachelor of science degree in library education. After serving a year as an assistant to the head librarian, She became chief librarian at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. Barbara managed a health science library containing material on all hospital related subjects. She ushered in a complex computer system and provided consultation with potential users as well as operating the equipment. Barbara was a highly trained specialist who worked with student nurses, medical technologists, x-ray technicians, students, interns, residents and practicing physicians. She oversaw not only the computer system but over hundreds of medical journals, professional periodicals, and books. Barbara received numerous recognition for her service to the hospital and community. A plaque was placed in the hospital library in her honor.
In addition to education, music played an important role. Most weekends Barbara listened to the opera on the radio. When that was over she tuned in to her beloved Baltimore Orioles. She loved listening to musicals such as Oklahoma, South Pacific, Carousel, and The King and I. She once enjoyed singing the Messiah with her husband Dave.
When she retired, Barbara left for Colorado to be close to her only daughter and her grandchildren. She took to the Colorado lifestyle, enjoying hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Barbara continued to enjoy reading and modestly used her intellect to serve as a model of a life-long learner.
Barbara is survived by daughter, Laura (Ron) Howie; grandchildren, Josh Howie and Sarah Radke; great-grandchildren, Brode, Bevan and Reese; brother, Kenneth (Anne) Hitchner; nephews, Kenneth and Doug; and nieces, Meghan and Lynne.
