Betty Parrish

Betty Rose Hammer was born in 1927 in Washington DC. After graduating from high school, she worked for the federal government as a secretary. She married John Parrish in 1951 and soon became a stay-at-home mom, raising three children in the suburbs of Baltimore. In 1960, the Parrish’s moved to the Denver area as John continued his career with Martin Marietta. In 1968 Betty returned to the working world, becoming an administrative assistant to the Deputy Comptroller of the Currency in the Denver region. She continued in that position until retiring in 1989.

Betty was active as a Girl Scout leader in the late 60’s and early 70’s, leading many troop meetings, cookie sales and camping trips. After her children were grown, she became active in Eastern Star and affiliated organizations, including holding the positions of Worthy Matron and Secretary. She enjoyed reading, crafts and gardening. Betty loved cats. She always had one or two sharing her home and was surrounded by pictures, books and clothing with feline images. She also spent countless hours watching over her grandchildren and attending every sporting and school activity they participated in.

Betty left this world at the age of 85 on May 12, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Irlando, her two sons, Jack and Chuck, her daughter-in-law Judy, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to support breast cancer research and treatment.
