Charlene Lee Gatterer, age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, in Boulder, Colorado. Charlene was born on April 16, 1938, and grew up on a beautiful farm outside of Henry, Nebraska. She often spoke lovingly about her childhood there and cherished the memories she made with her siblings, parents, and cousins. Those early years on the farm remained close to her heart throughout her life. She attended Chalk Butte Primary School and later Torrington High School in Wyoming, where she was voted “Most Attractive Girl” by her classmates—an honor that reflected both her natural beauty and the warm spirit that people were drawn to. In 1957, Charlene and her first husband, Jack Miller, welcomed their daughter, Diane, and moved to Boulder, Colorado. While living in Boulder, Charlene worked for the Bureau of Standards, where she later met the love of her life, Larry. Charlene and Larry built a beautiful life together filled with adventure, laughter, and devotion to family.
Together they enjoyed boating on Boulder Reservoir, square dancing, reading, traveling, and spending time with those they loved most. Charlene loved sewing, gardening, and reading, and she was famous for cooking the best Thanksgiving meal anyone had ever had. Charlene was known for her gentle spirit, kindness, and generosity. She always made sure everyone around her had everything they needed and was deeply loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 70 years, Lawrence “Larry” Gatterer, age 93; her daughter, Diane Rierden; and her grandchildren, Kevin Rierden and Shannon Rierden (Zachary Fox). Her family was the center of her world, and her love for them will live on forever. Charlene’s warmth, kindness, and beautiful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends.
