Charles T Miller III, (Chuck) age 77, of Golden, Colorado, passed away peacefully on January 15th, 2025. He will be remembered as a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who had a smile that could light up a room.
Born on July 31st, 1947, in Summit, New Jersey, he was the first-born son of Charles T Miller Jr. and Joan Orr Miller. He was later joined by three additional siblings: Margaret, Virginia and George. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He attended Wheat Ridge High School (class of 1965), received a bachelor's degree from CU Boulder (class of 1969) and a doctorate degree from Northwestern University’s School of Dentistry (class of 1973).
During his years as an undergraduate at Boulder, he met the love of his life, Jeanne Newburg while working in the kitchen at the student boarding house where Jeanne resided. They married in 1972, and shared nearly 55 years together, raising two children, a daughter, Janice and son, Matt. Chuck was a proud Papa to three grandsons, Tucker, Kyle and Benjamin.
In 1973 Chuck set up his private dental practice in Lakewood, eventually moving it to Golden in 2010. He retired in 2020 after a 47-year career treating patients with great care, dignity and concern. He was a long-time member of the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society and the Colorado Dental Association.
Chuck loved the great outdoors and compiled an impressive list of accomplishments exploring the mountains of the world. He summited more than 30 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks, as well as Mount Ranier in Washington, Mount Blanc in France, and most impressively, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at the age of 65.
When not seeking out mountain-tops, he loved camping, downhill skiing, rafting, hiking and road biking. An avid runner in his younger years, he successfully completed 3 full marathons. Though never a water-lover, he braved the rapids of the Grand Canyon three separate times, reveling in the peace and awe of nature found there.
Starting in 2001, he and Jeanne tackled a segmented bike-trip across America, completing the three-thousand-mile journey in the summer of 2020.
He shared his love of travel and exploration with his grandkids, rafting the rivers of northwest Montana, hiking the slot canyons of Utah and summiting Angel’s Landing with his wife, daughter and grandson Tucker during a spring break trip through Utah.
Chuck was a dedicated father, coaching his kids’ teams through countless soccer and basketball seasons. Hours were spent in the family driveway, perfecting left-handed layups, free throws and jump shots. He never missed a game and could be counted on for a detailed post-game analysis.
An avid CU Football fan, he and Jeanne have held season tickets for 45 years, cheering on the Buffs through the highs and lows of collegiate football. He was greatly encouraged by the recent turn-around of his team’s fortunes!
Chuck also treasured his group of close friends. For years, he and Jeanne joined together with a group he’d known since high school to compete (with spouses) in the aptly named Steamboat Challenge. The good-natured competition led to lots of laughter and unbreakable bonds.
In recent years, he and Jeanne joined Ski Meisters, and enjoyed time spent with new friends downhill skiing in the winters, biking and hiking in the summers. Chuck, always a reluctant golfer, never quit his attempts to perfect his swing, spending many afternoons on the driving range at Applewood Golf Course.
A member of Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church since childhood, Chuck was a dedicated church volunteer and elder, long-time member of the bell choir and served as the chair of the property management committee for decades.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, sly sense of humor, humble service to those in need, dedication to his family and friends, and his endless quest for the next great adventure.
Chuck is survived by his wife Jeanne, daughter Janice Lake (Matt) of Kalispell, Montana; son Matthew Miller (Lindsey) of Golden, Colorado; grandchildren Tucker and Kyle Lake and Benjamin Miller; as well as his three siblings Margaret Quintana of Portland, Oregon; Virginia Youngkin (Rich) of Littleton, Colorado; George Miller (Christy) of Scottsdale, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life ceremony will take place on February 8th, 2025, at Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church, 9180 W 38th Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church, the Parkinson’s Association of the Rockies, the Susan M Duncan YMCA or KIND (Kids in Need of Dentistry).
