He was born in San Diego, Calif., and attended a number of schools across the country before completing his education in Parsons, Ks. Jay always loved music and taught himself at an early age to play guitar. As a teenager and young adult, he co-founded and played in several rock bands in the Midwest. He moved to Southern California in the early 1970s, where he started a business in the packaging industry and later worked for Standard Oil. While in California, he earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying whenever the opportunity arose. Entrepreneurial by nature and gifted with the ability to learn quickly, he founded another company in Colorado when he moved to Littleton in 1990. At the time of his death, he was engaged in growing a travel accessories company with ties to Mexico.
Jay was predeceased by his father, Raymond O. Staggs, and sister, Diane Staggs Howard. He is survived by his son, Kelby Staggs; his mother, Janice Staggs; sister, Anita Staggs Warren, and her husband Bill Warren; brother, Brad Staggs; grandsons, Carter and Kyler; partner, Kay Karet; and numerous cousins.
