Danny Lee “Dan” Smith, 61, passed away due to complications from diabetes at his home in Northglenn, Colorado on July 26, 2021. Born March 28th, 1960 in Watertown, NY; Dan was the second of two children born to Robert James Smith, Jr. and Barbara Louise Wetterhahn.
Dan graduated from Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School in South Easton Massachusetts in 1979, and earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Boston University in 1991. He is survived by his three sons, Ryan, Colin, and Logan; and their mother, Karen Slater. His memory will live on through his remarkable children, which were his greatest passion and pride.
Dan believed in adventure, self-reliance, and personal freedom. He always lived his life to the fullest. His zest for life and “I can do that” attitude made him a joy to be with. Dan loved the natural beauty of the world, particularly the water. He was always prepared for an adventure, and he always carried swimming trunks with him wherever he went, “just in case,” a tradition still carried on by his sons.
He was a talented software engineer, contributing to several patents, and helped to unify the numerous emerging telecommunications systems into the cohesive network we know today. He was a skilled woodworker, a creative hobbyist, and an avid motorcycle rider. He was passionate about scouting and was an active troop leader. He loved music, especially live performances, and most especially when performed by his talented sons. He believed in hard work and finding a way to do it with a smile. He was witty and charismatic, making all feel welcome and encouraged. He was kind and generous with his time and knowledge, and any resources he could spare. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, to please donate to the Dan Smith Memorial Scouts Fund – benefitting Boy Scout Troop 278. https://gofund.me/19e9584f
