Donnie grew up in Globeville, a suburb of Denver and graduated from North High School in 1952. She worked at Mountain Bell as a clerk in 1952 for 15 years and when they broke up the Bell system she moved to AT&T. She eventually became a 2nd level supervisor at AT&T and retired in 1988.
Donnie will be remembered for her kindness and unwavering love for those around her. She loved to go out for breakfast, travel, fish, Mickey Mouse, wear large and colorful necklaces and earrings, and loved purple when decorating her house. She was one of the most genuinely compassionate people anyone could know. She was always willing to give her time, support, and a helping hand to anyone in need.
As a devoted single mother, Donnie provided guidance, stability, and unconditional love to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her kindness and love extended beyond her own family to friends, neighbors, cousins, nephews, and her dog Rusty.
Donnie is survived by her children Stephanie Gruber and Bill Howard; her grandchildren, Nicole Crowe, Hailey Neumuth, Tori Gruber, Albert and Dylan Howard; her great grandchildren Lainey, Madison and Carter Crowe; her good friend Shirley Howard, her cousins Debbie Johnson-Sasso, Bill and George Spomer; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace (Johnson) and Albert Yost; siblings Shirley Johnson, Patricia Damuth, and her partner of 25 years, Lloyd Johnson.
To honor her wishes a small family gathering will be held to lay her to rest next to her parents on May 29, 2026, at Crown Hill Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Donnie’s memory to Mount Evans Hospice in Evergreen, CO. Checks can be mailed to:
