

Dr. David Hartrenbach passed away May 25, 2023 in Aurora, CO.
Dr. Hartenbach was born December 6, 1934 in St. Louis, MO, son of Henry Charles and Loretta S.(Schwartz) Hartenbach.
Dr. Hartenbach received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Louis University in 1958; Master of Education, St. Louis University, 1960; Doctor of Education in Sacred Theology, University Northern Colorado,1981.
During his career, Dr. Hartenbach served as an Administrative Intern, St. Louis University H.S.1966-1967; Assistant Principal, St. Louis University High School, 1967-1968; Principal, Regis High School., (Denver, CO) 1968-1970; Principal, Benton Harbor High School (Michigan) 1970-1972;Principal, Hinkley High School., (Aurora, CO), 1972-1977; Executive Director of High Schools for Aurora Public Schools,1977-1986; Associate Superintendent of Instruction, Aurora Public Schools, 1986-1989; Auxiliary Associate Superintendent Aurora Public Schools, 1989- 1992; Superintendent of Schools, Aurora Public Schools, 1992-2002.
In 1995, Dr Hartenbach was named the Colorado Superintendent of the Year. Other awards included Aurora Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian of the Year, University of Northern Colorado Outstanding Leader in Education, and Rotary Club Educator of the Year.

After retirement from Aurora Public Schools, Dr. Hartenbach directed the Teacher in Residence Program at Metropolitan State College; and then became one of the driving forces in creating School Leaders for Colorado, a non-profit educational leadership program connected with the University of Colorado that offers an alternative licensing program for school administrators.
Dr. Hartenbach’s philosophy was that better decisions can be made when stakeholders are given the opportunity to be part of those decisions. This was demonstrated by his visits to every school and district site to meet with staff, teachers and students.
“Dr. H’s” family had no boundaries. He supported and encouraged people to grow and become better people. His philosophy encompassed his personal life as well. He never missed a family event. He had magical and special personal relationships with all his nieces and nephews, his brothers and their spouses, his step-sons, grandchildren and great nieces and nephews.
Dr. Hartenbach is survived by: his wife, Sharon Duke Hartenbach; stepchildren,Scott Maxey, Doug (Anne) Maxey , brother, Warren Hartenbach, and many loving nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; Henry Hartenbach (brother),and Jeffery Maxey (step son).
Dr. Hartenbach was passionate about traveling with his wife, fly fishing, and golf. He was an avid Broncos fan, even during the bad years.
Funeral Plans
Due to construction at the church, there will be a reception held Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 3-7 pm at Aurora Public Schools Professional Learning and Conference Center. The PLCC is located at 15771 E. 1st Ave. Aurora, CO 80011.
The funeral mass will be Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10 a.m., Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 13120 E Kentucky Ave Aurora, Colorado 80012.
