He was born in Denver, Colorado to Floyd and Dorothy Pinney. He graduated from North High School in Denver, 1957, where he met the love of his life, Sylvia, whom he married June 3, 1961.
Dennis served in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and was accepted into the Navy band and served on the USS Forrestal, the USS Wasp, and the USS Roosevelt until his honorable discharge in 1960.
After the Navy, Dennis and Sylvia had their three children in Denver where he worked as a milkman, owned his own business mowing lawns, and worked for Coors as an industrial carpenter until they moved to Strasburg where he worked on a 1300 acre farm, farming corn and wheat. In 1976, they then settled in Grand Junction, Colorado to raise their family. There he found work as a carpenter, a coal miner, and finally retired in 2005 after building log homes with Ackerman Log Homes. Dennis and Sylvia enjoyed a long happy marriage of 57 years.
Dennis loved collecting Colorado Rockies memorabilia, attending Rockies games in Denver, and attending the Rockies spring training in Arizona. He was always interested in woodworking, loved hunting, camping, fishing, and playing board games with family and friends.
He was conscious about his appearance and always looked sharp. Grandma said “some women have to dress their husbands, but I always enjoyed shopping with mine.” He was a gentleman and a wonderful husband. Everyday, he told grandma how beautiful she was.
Dennis loved God and accepted the Lord as his Savior as a young man. He had a high moral compass. As a child he was part of the Highlander Boys, where he vowed to honor and live by the values he learned while in the group. Highlander boys were required to attend Sunday school regularly and pledged to live by the written principles, “be kind, live pure, speak truth, know right and wrong, defend the weak, play the game square. Aim to be prompt, obey orders, be neat, avoid slang, be polite, and be positive.” These values he carried out his whole life.
Dennis and Sylvia regularly attended Pear Park Baptist Church and have many close and dear friends there.
Dennis was a devote husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Sylvia, his son Kevin and wife Rosalie, son Dean and wife Kristine, and daughter DeAnna. He was adored by his grandchildren Lanie, Barry, Lexi and Jessica, and his great- grandchildren Elise, Ian, Cambri, and twins Rory and Adeline.
