Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Donnie was the youngest of three brothers born to Jack and Mildred Kastner. He grew up with immense pride in his decorated Navy parents and established deep, lifelong roots and endless friendships throughout North Denver. Donnie graduated from North Denver High School’s class of 1969.
Donnie was a widely respected entrepreneur and a well-known figure in the automotive industry. Over his career, he owned two businesses; The Pub and Grub Grill and Bar, and Kastner Kars Inc. He also spent decades working as an automotive manager across both Denver and San Diego.
Known for being larger than life and full of adventure, Donnie lived life on his own terms. He was a free spirit with a unique, authentic outlook, a generous heart, and a great sense of humor, he was very charismatic and could make anyone laugh. An avid outdoorsman, Donnie was equally at home in the mountains as he was by the ocean. He loved both river and deep-sea fishing, and though North Denver was always home, some of the best and happiest years of his life were spent living in San Diego and spending time in Cabo San Lucas. He also shared a special bond with animals; Donnie loved dogs, and they instinctively loved him right back.
Donnie was preceded in death by his father, Jack Kastner; his mother, Mildred Swan (1993); his brother, David Kastner (1989); his beloved wife, Betty Kastner (2023); and his sister-in-law, Sandy Kastner (2025).
His legacy of laughter, love and resilience lives on through his daughter, Becky Kastner Sassaman; his cherished grandchildren, Max Sassaman and Madison Lynch; his brother, Michael Kastner; his nephews, Andrew Kastner (Paula), Logan Kastner, and Michael Kastner; his niece, Stacy Short; his great-niece, Kailee; his great-nephew, Jack; and his sweet puppy, Hope.
