Edward Bell Fairchild Jr. was born to Ethel and Edward Fairchild on June 3, 1932. Born in Denver Colorado, he was a lifelong Colorado native. In his formative years, Edward lived in the Capitol Hill area and eventually attended East High School. He had fond memories of working at Mammoth Gardens and eating Rocky Built hamburgers, growing up. Four years later he began his lifelong Federal Government service by starting work at the Denver Mint. He was drafted two years later and proudly served in the U.S. Army being stationed as part of the occupying force in Germany. He enjoyed his time in the service greatly and was proud to be a member of the Big Red One. Amongst other duties, one of the things he enjoyed the most was being squad leader for a recoilless rifle unit. After departing active duty, he had more fun as a tank commander in the reserves. During this time he enjoyed amateur Sports Car racing in the SCCA.
After active military service, Edward returned to the U.S. Mint for a few years before leaving service there for where he would spend the rest of his career at the U. S. Government Printing Office (G.P.O.). He started working in the Shipping Department, graduated to the bindery, and eventually to Power Folder Operator. It was while he was working at G.P.O. that he met his future wife Betty. They eventually had 3 children (Ronald, Ruth, and Daniel). Edward and Betty found faith in Christ and all their children were raised in Lutheran schools even though that was a sacrifice. Edward retired from G.P.O. in 1993 and he and Betty spent much of their leisure and retirement time in travelling. They especially enjoyed travel to Las Vegas.
Edward is survived by 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Edward passed from Esophageal cancer on January 15, 2020 and Betty of Ovarian cancer on November 28, 2014.
