Electa Cameron was born in Sioux City, Iowa to parents Walter and Electa Baur. Electa lived to the age of 102. She was preceded in death by her husband, LuVerne, her sons, Charles and Steven Cameron, and her grandson, Mark Cameron.
Electa grew to love Colorado and the Rocky Mountains in her childhood while visiting her aunt and uncle, who lived in Boulder, CO. She met LuVerne (Vern) and they married in September 1939. Electa experienced the heartbreak of miscarriage and eventually welcomed their first child, Charles Bruce, in 1942. Electa was a strong single parent while Vern served with the Allied Forces in India during World War II. In 1947, they welcomed a second son, Steven Scott which added to Electa’s joy of being a mother.
Vern and Electa raised their boys in Sioux City, Iowa until they moved to Ft. Collins, CO in 1959. Both Vern and Electa worked for Colorado State University. Vern worked as a mechanic in the motor pool and Electa worked in various secretarial positions in the Economics and Environmental Health Services departments but her favorite position was at Ellis Hall with all of the college kids. The couple had an active social life and enjoyed camping and exploring Colorado with their boys.
Electa met Vern while swimming at McCook Lake, South Dakota, and swimming was one of the great loves of her life! She competed in the Senior Olympics in all swimming events, earning numerous medals but swimming the mile remained her favorite event. She even swam at 24 Hour Fitness at the age of 101!
Vern and Electa built a cabin home in Poudre Canyon in stages over a 10-year period during the seventies. Electa took pride in having designed the cabin herself with the help of a professor of Architecture from Denver University. They lived in the home from 1980-1984 until they moved back into town due to Vern’s declining health.
Electa relied on her strong faith and resilience as she experienced the deaths of her son, Chuck in 1984, her husband Vern in 2004, and her son Steve in 2010. Despite the tragedies and losses she faced, Electa was energetic and very involved in her various church communities and with the Aspen Club in Fort Collins. Her work as a volunteer at Poudre Valley Hospital and at the Colorado Welcome Center gave her much pride and joy. She loved sharing her knowledge and love of Colorado with all she met. Despite all the hardships, Electa and Vern created many fond memories traveling the country in their small RV, attending ElderHostel events and visiting family and friends. Everywhere she went Electa took her knitting; she knitted many baby hats to donate to hospitals as well as beautiful, comforting prayer shawls.
Electa maintained strong family ties with all of Vern’s nieces and nephews, her cousins, and her friends. Helen and Dottie’s children and their families always considered her as another Mom and Grandma. Her network of friendships through church and Springwood included many people and was an all-encompassing blessing in her later years. She was an avid correspondent and loved to share every card and letter she received.
Through the years, Electa treasured the time spent with her grandchildren and their families. They shared many picnics, cribbage games, and holiday gatherings. Electa moved to Arvada in July 2015 to be closer to her family. She was blessed to find a beautifully welcoming church community at 4 C’s (Christ Community Covenant Church) and the ladies' bible study every Tuesday morning was a highlight of her week along with the Sunday worship service.
Electa is survived by her granddaughter, Marsha Schultze (Ken), and great-grandchildren Cameron, Megan, and Courtney. Grandson Mark’s children, Laila and Braeden. Steve’s children Lelani LaMott and Jeremy Cameron along with her cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In Electa’s honor, sit by a campfire and eat as many s’mores as you can, play games with friends and family, savor a nice hot cup of coffee, attend a church service, or take a scenic drive. She truly enjoyed the simple joys of life!
