Evelyn was born on July 17, 1930 to Joseph and Viola (Beck) Briggs of Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. She was baptized in the Johnsonburg Methodist Church in July of 1930 and confirmed there at the age of 12. She played the piano, taught Sunday School, and sang in the church choir. She loved school, especially Math, Latin, and French. In High School, she played the piano for programs and plays. She was the captain of the girl's basketball team, a member of the Slide Rule Club, as well as the National Honor Society. At graduation, she was named the Valedictorian. After World War II, she volunteered in a Civil Service program called "Skywatch," which involved spotting unidentified aircraft in the sky. During those years, she was also a leader of a Brownie Scout Program.
After graduation, Evelyn worked for the New York & Penn Company in Accounting for 4 years. In January of 1950, she met Joseph Harris (who served in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson between November 15, 1950 and November 14, 1952). They were married on December 12, 1952 and moved to Colorado. The marriage was blessed with 2 children: Russell who lives in Lakewood, Colorado and Diane, who lives in Kiowa, Colorado.
While in Denver, Evelyn worked part-time for 25 years in Accounting at the May D&F and 5 years at Conrad's Mademoiselle Executive Office. Beginning in 1972, she worked as a volunteer at Redeemer Lutheran School and Church until 2005, at which time she had to leave because of her and Joe's health problems (Needless to say, volunteering at Redeemer was by far the best of any of the jobs!). She was a member of the LWML, The Rebekah Circle, and the Board of Parish Life. She served as Treasurer of Brentwood Methodist Church for 4 years and Redeemer Lutheran Church for 6 years. Both Joe and Evelyn loved doing the Lord's work. They believe in giving freely of their time, talents and treasures.
Evelyn enjoyed many kinds of music, the Denver Broncos, NASCAR Racing, game shows, old western movies, baseball, basketball and especially the times spent with her family at their cabin in Westcliffe and on the ranch in Kiowa. She adored her great-grandchildren; they brought her so much joy.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, both parents, and a sister. She is survived by her son, Russell Harris of Lakewood, Colorado; daughter Diane Neff and husband Joe of Kiowa, Colorado; granddaughter Amber Weitzel and husband Andrew of Kiowa, Colorado and great-grandchildren Skylar and Joseph Weitzel of Kiowa, Colorado.
The family and friends remember Evelyn as a kind, loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished her family, friends and relatives. She was grateful for the loving care given to her by all of her family. She is our beautiful angel and will be sorely missed.
