Jean, as she liked to be called, was born October 8, 1928 in Denver to Florence Elizabeth (Mitchell) and Myron William Martin. She grew up in North Denver and graduated from North High School. She married Robert G. Kurtz on August 11, 1946 at Berkley Presbyterian Church, still a teenager just out of high school. They had four children together, two sons and two daughters. As a young lady she was catcher for an amateur softball team sponsored by United Airlines, and always loved the game. Jean liked the outdoors and was an expert gardener. She enjoyed hiking, camping and fishing. She was an excellent bowler, and at one time belonged to several local leagues. Her favorited hobby was not only history of dolls, but also an avid collector. She had hundreds of them proudly on display throughout her home. Family history and genealogy was another of her passions. She loved gathering her family for all occasions, especially Christmas. She left wonderful memories of those times for her family to remember with great fondness. Jean had a warm, affectionate personality that drew people close to her. She was a long time resident of Arvada of nearly 50 years.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert G. Kurtz, who died in 1991. She is survived by her four children: Robert W. and Sheryl Kurtz of Roxborough, Danny L. and Nancy Kurtz of Parker, Cindy J. and Jim Callow of Westminster, and Kathleen D. and Dave Sewolt of Arvada; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and her sister Beverly Martin of Clifton.
