Broomfield, CO — Fred “Fritz” Henry Mohr, 99, died Monday, September 12, 2016 at Broomfield Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Broomfield following a fall that broke his shoulder.
He leaves his wife of 76 years, Alina Grace (Miller) Mohr; his three sons, Gary, Kenneth and Donald; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and many cousins and close friends who will miss his gentle humor and noble values.
Born in Lindsay, NE, on August 26, 1917, the son of Jacob and Emma (Goehry) Mohr, he moved to Denver, CO when he was approximately eight. He lived in the Denver metro area for the rest of his life. He was predeceased by all three siblings, Lorna Mohr, Caroline (Mohr) Esposito, and Aroline (Mohr) Funderberg, as well as one granddaughter, Nina Mohr.
In the eighth grade, Mr. Mohr quit school to begin a lifelong career as a finish carpenter. He met his wife, Alina “Grace” Miller, at Elitch Gardens, a popular dance venue in its day, and they were married in 1940. Three years later he left his young family to serve in WWII as a Naval Seaman 1st Class aboard the USS West Virginia aircraft carrier loading 5” guns until his honorable discharge in December, 1945. This patriot was one of the WWII veterans who didn’t mind sharing his war experiences.
Mr. Mohr’s passion for gardening led him to create beautiful rose gardens, vegetable gardens from which friends and family benefited, and a house filled inside and out with other beautiful flowers and plants. His hobby did not stop him from socializing almost every weekend with family members and friends.
In retirement, he continued to express his skill and love of woodworking by creating marquetry wall hangings, jewelry boxes, and pieces of furniture for his home, for friends and for family members. He often talked about the marquetry club and the other men with whom he shared this interest.
A funeral service was held September 19, 2016 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
The family’s sense of loss has not been dulled by the fact of Mr. Mohr’s many years on earth which is a tribute to the deep connection he had with them. There are many who found inspiration from his work ethic, skills, service to his country, and his devotion to his family.
