Jerry was a much-loved husband, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, colleague and friend to many. There are so many words to describe our Jerry Hales. He was compassionate, loving, thoughtful and forever kind. He lived a life of humility and generosity. Jerry always put others first and was a helper to all; at every turn he eagerly sought out ways to assist his family, friends, colleagues, and strangers, particularly those down on their luck.
Born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Jerry was the 4th son of 6 boys born to his late parents Catherine and Walter Hales. Following a career of 24 years at the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington, DC, Jerry and his beloved wife Betsy Marilley relocated in 2019 from Kensington, Maryland to begin the next chapters of their lives at their home in Ruedi Shores, near Basalt, Colorado. He found his joy living in the mountains, looking out on their view of frequent double rainbows streaming down into the reservoir. Jerry was not ready to retire and spent nearly 2 years at the Rocky Mountain Institute after arriving in Colorado. Jerry loved his new home, spending time with Betsy and enjoying the beauty of the Rockies and Colorado. During the winter months, he spent endless hours on his snowblower tractor removing snow at not only his home but that of neighbors. Jerry never turned down a request and often volunteered to take on miscellaneous chores for neighbors. Exploring the mountains throughout the summer was a favorite for Jerry.
Jerry, thank you for all the wonderful things that you did for all of us. Will love you more than words can describe. We miss you with all our hearts. Until we meet again.
