Heidi Erker, 42, loving partner to Sean Sassaman and devoted mother to Benjamin, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2021, at Lutheran Medical Center, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Born to Harlan and Debbie Erker (both deceased), Heidi was a cherished sister, aunt, niece, and friend. Heidi’s presence brought honest joy to everyone who had the privilege to know her, and her happiness grew each time she made someone smile.
Heidi graduated from Lakewood High School, in 1996. Her love of science and nature led her to the Colorado School of Mines, her father’s alma mater. In the process of earning her degree in petroleum engineering, she made great friends, and caused her fair share of mischief. A girl without an inside voice, no matter how someone met Heidi, they shared a private joke or special memory of her sparkle.
Along with Heidi’s ability to brighten lives with her love, her most captivating trait was her determination. Despite an unfair share of adversities, Heidi persevered, and defiantly lived her life on her own terms. Each challenge was met with greater resolve. Nothing illustrated Heidi’s determination and love more than her commitment to being a mother. When told she would require a team of doctors to safely deliver her baby, and the process could be life-threatening, true to form, Heidi delivered Benjamin early, with only a nurse. In a life filled with accomplishments, being Benjamin’s mom was the one of which she was most proud. Heidi was happiest when she was skateboarding with Benjamin, hosting the perfect pool day, and fiercely loving those lucky enough to know her.
The importance of organ donation to Heidi cannot be overstated. As a recipient, she had a profound understanding of its value that lives on through her own donations. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Donor Alliance, in her name (https://www.donoralliance.org/contribute). Eternally missed, always.
