Helen was always musically inclined and took piano lessons as a young girl. Her talents helped her win first place ribbons for singing at the school's annual track meets. After high school, to help make ends meet for the family, Helen worked as an usher at the local theatre, babysat, and fixed/set hair for some of the local ladies in town. In 1938, the family moved to Wisconsin, where Helen graduated from Cosmetology School and worked as a "Beautician" for many years, a job she enjoyed and spoke of often. It was in 1952, after a sightseeing trip to Colorado, that Helen and her sister, Luverne, decided to get into their shiny new '52 Ford, and move to Colorado. Helen began working for Chevron as a stock accountant, including for a time in California, returning to Colorado a few years later, where she eventually retired from the company.
Helen lived a simple, carefree life. She attended Mass every Sunday, enjoyed entertaining friends, playing cards, going to dances at the local ballrooms, and especially making people laugh. Helen had a beautiful singing voice, and often expressed she wished she would have practiced and been more committed to pursuing a singing career of some kind. After retirement, Helen became more involved with church activities, card groups and traveling with close friends.
Helen, always known for her good humor and spirited ways, kept people laughing through the last days of her life. Her Caregivers described her as “Spunky Little Helen.” She was loved dearly by everyone she knew and will be greatly missed.
Helen is survived by two sisters, Luverne Shutner, of Arvada, Colorado and Donna Armbruster, of Hudson, Wisconsin, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at Shrine of Saint Anne Catholic Church in Arvada, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.
