I remember the first time Bob gave me a ride to choir practice in his sports car -- I don't remember the make.  He wouldn't start the engine until I put on my lap belt --- the first I had ever seen.  I gave me confidence in his character, knowing safety was important his mind for others.

I knew Bob and Carolyn through many years at St. James. Regardless of his speech limitations, Bob was always a communicator! Through his smile, his friendliness, his music, his love for all, and even his unbidden tears in the midst of a conversation. Sending blessings of peace to Carolyn and all the family. 

I meet Bob a few years ago. Although Bob could not talk to me like I know he wanted to, we had such a good report. I think about our time together a lot. He helped me to become a better person. I didn't even see it coming! Bob's presence about him demanded that I look deep inside myself to improve -- to positively impact people. I love this man. He will inspire me daily as I finish strong like Bob.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to Bob's loving family, who also show their love by way of the amazing care they took for Bob in the short time that I have known them. 

We met Bob and Carolyn over 50 years ago through the St.James Choir and Mariners (a Presbyterian Couples group).  Later there were 12 of us who formed the SJBandB Club (St.James Bridge and Booze Club) for monthly buffet and bridge evenings.  Bob was an avid player and was always chastising us for misplaying.  He loved to sing and he and Eileene sang descants together, especially for “Holy, Holy, Holy”.  Even after he couldn’t speak very well, we would look at each other, he winked and we Belted it out together.

I remember the first time Bob picked me up for choir practice. He drove his Alpha ? and wouldn't  start until I connected my seat belt. That was the first seat belt  I'd  ever experienced.  Soon, I got and installed a set in my car, I thought that was such a good idea.

John 13:34  A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  
This the verse I’ve always associated with Granddad because of conversations and lessons he taught me.   It has always stuck with me and I think of him every time I hear this verse. I will miss him but always remember the life lessons and examples he passed on to me.  He lived as an example of the man I always strive to be in this world.  

I will never forget the encouragement that I received from Bob as he sang the tune of Amazing Grace with such joy!  He loves Jesus and blessed me every time I met with him.  I look forward to seeing Bob and Jesus face to face!

My condolences to Greg and his family.  You were blessed to have Mr. Howerton for so many years.  May the memories provide you comfort.  May God Bless and Comfort you and your family!
