Janice, a native Coloradoan, graduated from Ranum high school, California State University-Sacramento (BA degree), and the University of Colorado (MA degree). She taught elementary school children, grades K-3, for 20 years, all in Jefferson County Public Schools.
Jan embraced her Japanese cultural heritage and learned the Japanese language from her mother and her grandmother, who emigrated from Japan. She played koto, knew how to perform tea ceremony, and danced in kimono for Obon, a Japanese festival. Her love for the culture was imbued in her children who played Japanese drums with Denver Taiko for several years. Jon, to this day, remains a member, and additionally serves on the Board of the Denver Buddhist Temple.
Her hobbies included cross stich, jigsaw puzzles, watching Disney movies, snorkeling (she retired to Maui with Malcolm for 7 years), cooking/baking, jogging (she logged 20,000 steps on her Fitbit daily), solving the Sunday Los Angeles and New York Times crossword puzzles, and playing with/reading to her grandchildren.
Jan will be missed dearly by all those she touched as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher.
An open service will be held on Tuesday, November 21st, 11am, at the:
Denver Buddhist Temple
1947 Lawrence Street
Denver, CO 80202.
