Jean Von Canon Hilton was born on February 21st 1920 in West End North Carolina. She was the 4th of 9 children. Her parents were Forest Whitney Von Canon and Margaret McCaskill. They lived in West End North Carolina until the family moved to Sanford when Jean was in college. She grew up walking to school, playing with her siblings, eating from the garden and walking down the railroad tracks on Sunday—entertainment sure looked different then! She also played on the women’s basketball team in high school.
She attended college at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Lewisburg College and became an English teacher. To help support the war effort she worked in an ammunition factory and then enlisted in the Navy. She went to boot camp in New York City, and was later stationed in New Orleans till the end of the war.
She then started teaching in North Carolina and met Roy Hilton. They married and settled in Colorado, where they had two children -Douglas and Joanne. They had a home in Golden and a wheat farm in Strasburg. She always was ready to help make the logistics work and was a dedicated, and caring partner. She was a wonderful mother; always patient, present, and very active caring for the household. She particularly enjoyed baking and tending to her roses.
In her later years, she always enjoyed walking and exercising. She was an avid reader and student of history, devouring countless biographies.
