Teddy Roosevelt wrote of the man who refuses to sit on the sidelines but rather jumps into the fray and engages life with all of its hills and valleys, it's triumphs and defeats. The one who gets covered with dust and sweat and blood. He calls him "the man who is actually in the arena. . . who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and who spends himself in a worthy cause.”
Such an apt description of John Fitzsimmons. He chose to live his life in the arena - not on the sidelines - and in doing so he has left a legacy for us to live into.
And so, if in the days ahead, you feel a nudge to jump more fully into life with great enthusiasm, great devotion and to spend yourself in a worthy cause, know this. That is probably John’s unique and booming voice, shouting at you to get into the arena. He would tell us there is still work to be done, people to be loved, and life to be lived.
