On the evening of June 8, 2026, John D. Salzman peacefully passed away leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, kindness and unwavering love. Born in the small town of Dixon, Illinois, on March 16, 1930, one of John’s greatest gifts was his love of life that he shared with all of us.
The son of Adam and Bertha Salzman, John grew up alongside his brother, Mark, and sisters Ione, Gladys, and Daisy, all of whom have passed on. John’s remarkable life was a testament to the strength of family ties, as he remained a beloved uncle to countless nieces and nephews and took great joy in watching their families grow. In his later years, John found companionship and love with Ann Gillmeister, his long-time partner.
John pursued his education with vigor, earning his Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois State Teachers College, his Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois State College, and ultimately, a Ph. D. from the University of Colorado. His time in the US Army, stationed at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, reinforced his profound respect for service and duty, values he carried throughout his life.
A dedicated educator, John shared his passion for learning as a Chemistry professor at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado, for nearly three decades. Even after retiring, John returned to teach German to students at Red Rocks.
John’s zest for life was evident in his love for the mountains. As an active member and trip leader for the Colorado Mountain Club, he cherished stunning mountain landscapes. Often, John could be spotted sporting his Tirolerhut (Tyrollean hat) hiking or cross-country skiing among the mountains of Colorado. His summers were marked by journeys to Europe, where he could be found scaling the peaks of the Alps. Well into his 95th year, John was a familiar and inspiring sight trekking thorough his Eiber neighborhood with his trusty poles.
A man of many talents, John was not only a lover of nature, but also of music. In addition to enjoying listening to music in his home, John regularly attended Symphony performances. In the 1980’s, John served as the Director of the Johannes Brahms Choir, directing an a capella choir in singing the works of German and Austrian Composers and bringing people together through the universal language of song. John’s involvement with the T.E.V. Edelweiss Club further showcased his dedication to community and culture.
John was a man of quiet strength and gentle humor. Though he could be shy, his quick wit and warm smile left an indelible impression on those fortunate enough to know him. He tended his backyard garden with care, cultivating common and novel vegetables, a testament to his nurturing spirit.
John’s life was a melody of grace, compassion and quiet strength. Though he has departed from this world his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and who loved him.
The family of John D. Salzman extends heartfelt gratitude for your prayers, support, and kindness during this time.
