Joseph Hyde Heath II passed away peacefully at his home on June 1, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of his family. He was welcomed home by his father, Joseph Hyde Heath; his mother, Joan Heath; and his brother, Thomas Heath.
Known to everyone simply as Hyde—and only as Joe when he was in trouble—he lived a full, beautiful, and meaningful life.
Hyde met his one and only eternal companion, Gail, while attending BYU in Provo, Utah. During their courtship, Gail returned home to Arizona, a development Hyde did not particularly appreciate. Determined to bring her back to Provo, he drove straight to Arizona to get her. Along the way, his car broke down, and he called his future father-in-law for help. To pay for the repairs and continue the journey, he sold some stock so he could get Gail safely back to Provo. That story would become one of many examples of Hyde’s determination, devotion, and love for Gail.
Hyde and Gail were married on June 12, 1971, in Provo, Utah. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Colorado, where they built a life together and welcomed four children: Joseph Hyde Heath III, Mary Ann, Katie, and Amanda.
Colorado became home. Hyde loved its people, its beauty, and especially its mountains. Before long, the mountains called to him often enough that he built a beautiful home on Woodmoor Mountain in Larkspur, Colorado, where countless memories were made with family and friends.
Hyde lived for two things above all else: his family and fishing. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, provider, protector, and friend. He worked tirelessly to care for those he loved and found some of his greatest joy on the water, rod in hand, surrounded by family or the quiet beauty of God’s creations.
As taught in The Family: A Proclamation to the World, Hyde faithfully provided, presided, and protected his family. He fulfilled those sacred responsibilities with love, faith, and unwavering devotion.
On February 27, 2015, Hyde and Gail, together with their children, were sealed for eternity in the Denver Colorado Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His faith in Jesus Christ was central to his life, and he cherished the promises of the gospel and the eternal nature of families.
Those who knew Hyde will remember his contagious laugh, quick wit, sense of humor, and unwaveringly positive outlook on life. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, lifting spirits, and finding joy in both life’s grand adventures and its simple moments.
Hyde’s personal motto was simple: “To the pure life.” He sought to live that motto every day through faith, integrity, hard work, love, and service to others.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds peace and hope in the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the sealing power of the holy temple. Because of the Savior, they know this separation is temporary and that they will be reunited with Hyde again.
Until that joyful day, may he rest easy, enjoy the company of loved ones on the other side of the veil, and continue to watch over those he loved so dearly.
Here’s to the pure life.
