Juan was born in Blanca, CO and grew up in Sheridan, CO with his parents and four siblings. He served in the United States Army for three years from May 1964 to May of 1967 with one year in Vietnam earning him the following service medals.
National Defense Service Medal
Vietnam Service Medal
Vietnam Campaign Medal
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and
Parachutist Badge
After his time in the service, he married his “pretty lady” Elsie in 1968. They were married for 54 years and had three children. He was a drywaller for the majority of his working career. He did much construction on friends and families homes and worked on many buildings throughout the Denver area. After retiring from construction, he worked for the City of Denver as a trash collector, graffiti remover, and then worked in maintenance doing snow removal and painting on the DIA runways.
In his retirement he loved spending time with his wife and going to yard sales and estate sales and fixing up their house. He did tremendous landscaping on their front and back yard and loved spending time outdoors enjoying his handiwork. He loved to read as much as he could until his eyes became weaker and he loved watching his favorite Westerns and the Walton’s in his favorite easy chair.
In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, tennis and even softball. He never enjoyed dancing, but would appease his “pretty lady” and get out on the dance floor every once in a while. He did pretty good counting his steps, but would get a little messed up if you talked while dancing. So talking was never allowed while dancing.
He had the ability to enjoy the simple things in life. Good food. A good movie. Gospel hymns. His favorite recliner. A warm blanket. Sleeping in. And most of all sugar!
