Kam was born in Canton China . She is survived by her daughter Wanda Look, son in law Todd Anderson , grandchildren Ryan Anderson, Aimee Anderson, the number 3 oldest sister Kim Yee, and number 5 older sister Wai Lowe and her many many loved relatives from Arizona, California, Canada, Colorado, Hong Kong and New York. She appreciated all your efforts and love.
Kam also appreciated all her wonderful neighbors who have been so loving and supportive, Rose & Mark, John, Kris & Joanne, Charles and Pierre, Marianne and Clarence. She also really valued the friendships of her business acquaintances especially Mr. Bob Strum and Mr. Bob Rose. They have known and helped Kam for over 40 years. Ruth and Scott, thank your both for your time and wonderful sharing of food and friendship. Some very special people also came into her life later that I would like to mention, Wendy Park and Joan Lemley. These two lovely and extremely young looking ladies took such good care of Kam and her family. We owe them a huge thank you. If we've forgotten to mention anyone please know that we appreciate and know you care, thank you. Lastly, thank you to the ever supportive staff of Collier Hospice who guided me each step and held our hands as we walked this journey.
Now for some things you may not know about Kam,...
Kam was the youngest and 6th girl out of 7 siblings. She grew up in rural China tending to fish ponds. However, things got rough when her mother was bitten by a dog and Kam was left in someone else care. This was a difficult transition in her life. At only age 13, she was to tend to chores and not go to school. However, Kam chose to go to school despite her guardian's wishes because she valued education. It was because of this decision, that she went to school to learn, but many days, went to bed hungry. At the age of 13 she only weighed 68 pounds. I tell you this story because it explains why Kam always felt that everything was better if you had a good meal.
Before she moved to the United States from China, she was a nurse caring for young children and earned a bonus in Yen for operation manuals she wrote. Her father was imprisoned by the communists at this time, in fact he had been kept captive so long that his beard was mid belly. Kam very bravely cashed her entire check and rescued her father by bribing and negotiating with others. After, she even took him on a midnight boat ride from Canton to Hong Kong under tarps, to make sure he was safe. One of Kam's most beautiful characteristics, was her dedication to her family, and unconditional love.
When she was 29 she moved to America to marry her husband, Henry Hipp Look. They worked together building his dentist practice. She was his clerk and dental assistant. They traveled to many dental conventions together. Even after Henry's passing she continued to go to medical presentations for years. She always valued good teeth, and health.
She enjoyed alot of travel and comradery with the Colorado National Bank senior club, I think her favorite trip would be the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasedena, the up close look at all those exotic flowers made her so happy.
Kam was also an avid gardener and loved her flowers. She shared everything from flowers, grapes, peaches, nectarine, beets, green beans to bushels of lettuce.
She loved her "worker" car the 1981 AMC Spirit. If you were visited by her during the time she owned the car, you definitely knew she was coming as you could hear the main bearing squealing at least a block and 1/2 away. She finally gave it up after the leaf spring broke and the car limped along on 3 wheels. Everytime we hear a car squealing down the road we think its grandma. Another form of transportation that she loved, was taking the bus. She took the bus everywhere, spending ridiculous hours riding to and from. Kam loved public transportation, she loved Colorado, and she loved America.
Her favorite TV shows were "Wrestling Mania", "Meet the Press", CNBC, and "Who Wants to be a Millionare?". Often times I would have to phone her to get the front door open because she would have 3 tv's going simultaneously at maximum volume. Calling was my last resort after banging on her windows and yelling for half an hour.
When she was in China, her father operated a peanut oil factory which pressed the oil around the clock. This explains why she could always fall asleep anywhere despite any noise. Theater, movies, sightseeing, you name it, she could always get a nap in. The only place I never saw her fall asleep was at sporting events. It was only in recent years that she discovered the joy of watching sports. Of course many times we did have to tell her, Mom you are rooting for the wrong team!!
Kam passed away from the complications of colon cancer but at the time of her diagnosis, she made the decision to not do any conventional medicine or chemo. She chose to live life on her own terms for these last 2 years and took 3 life celebrating trips in her remaining time, watched a high school football championship game that was won in the last 29 seconds and shared her life and philosophies with many relatives in heartfelt conversations.
She touched all of our lives in a good way. She was a spirited grandmother, mother, aunt but most of all a good friend to all of us. Always unfailingly polite and offering to cook anyone a meal including a neighbor's cat. I can only say that over the years, I was always astounded at her amazing energy, independence, and enormous heart. So when you leave this service, I hope you remember the woman who brought so much joy to everyone's doorstep. I hope you're inspired by her long and outstanding life. And i hope you keep this beautiful and strong woman in not only your minds, but in your hearts.
from the grandkids........
For my Grandma
When first hearing of my grandma's cancer, i was confused, because bad things arent supossed to happen to good people. At first glance, many would underestimate that such a loving and caring individual could reside inside such a tiny woman. But I know that my Grandma cared more about her family than herself, and she would never take advantage of anything. Kindness was her natural gift. She was the most admirable person i knew.
My grandma impacted my life in many ways.I know that I might not be here if she had not helped me get through eczema when I was young. I remember all the nights we spent in hotel rooms together. She let me stay up late, and in the morning, she cooked steamed broccoli and rice. I looked up to her with respect and I hope that someday I can be as kind as her.
Coming from China you were always so grateful for everything. Grateful for the opportunities you had, grateful for the food that we eat and grateful for the precious time we spend together. Now its our turn to be grateful for what we value most. And Grateful for the time spent with you through the years, and the laughs we shared.
Thank you for being so inspiring. You are the best grandma a kid could ever ask for and I love you Grandma.
Dear Grandma,
I miss your laugh, I miss your smile
I want you to know your life was worthwhile.
You could spread joy like wildfire.
Your determination made everyone smile
Your heart was full of love and your mind was quick.
Your voice a song, as sweet as music
Indeed your life was beautiful, but hard and long.
So now, much better in God's arms so strong.
Now you're free, free as a bird in the sky,
Free up in heaven, so glorious and high.
