Katherine Louise Smith, 87, of Black Hawk, Colorado passed away on February 28, 2026. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents James Arthur Hyde and Hilda Irene Hyde; her siblings Jane and Robert Hyde; her husband of 62 years, Warren Robert Smith, and her eldest son, Mark Robert Smith.
Katherine is survived by her sister Donna Markey; her son Daniel; her six grandchildren Brandon, Sierra, Morgan, Alexis, Bryan and Sheindel and her precious dogs Blaze and Muka.
Katherine was born on April 4, 1938 to James Arthur Hyde and Hilda Irene Hyde in Mohawk, New York, where she stayed and graduated from Mohawk (Jarvis) High school in 1956. Shortly after graduating, Kate met the love of her life while he was stationed in New York and they wed on July 26, 1958 and started their life together in Colorado. The love and companionship Kate and Warren shared was tangible. They shared a life full of hiking, gardening, rock hunting, raising dogs and babies, popcorn on Friday nights and unconditional love. Kate continued to love Warren long after his passing, until her final breath, knowing their love is eternal and will travel lifetimes.
After building their dream home in Colorado, Kate spent her time fostering community and lifelong friendships in their small mountain town. At the county fair, or just walking around town, people stopped and talked to Kate. She was passionate about serving her community and did so for over 15 years with the Timberline Auxiliary Fire Department and The Gilpin County Library. Kate put on bake sales, craft fairs, book sales, led meetings, was the trusted treasurer and even brought meals to the local firemen. Kate exuded warmth, generosity and compassion while also being resilient, humble and kind.
Katherine’s final resting place will be in the Rocky Mountains with her husband, Warren and her son, Mark. May we remember her when we are hiking on a sunny day, playing a game of Rummy 500, playing slot machines at the casino, petting a cute dog, eating a smothered burrito, watching a cardinal or hummingbird in flight, or when we are giving back to our community, like Kate held so close to her heart.
In lieu of a flowers or memorial, Katherine’s family would like people to donate to The Gilpin County Library, Timberline Auxiliary Fire Department or your local animal shelter.
