Ken was born in Lafayette, IN on February 10, 1930 to O.B. and Faye Riggs. He joined two older sisters, Martha Lee and Bobbie Jean. A brother, Gordon would follow along soon. All preceded him in death.
Ken grew up active in Scouts; rising to Eagle Scout. He also participated in Sullivan High School activities, playing basketball and serving as class president. He attended Purdue University receiving a BS degree in general science in 1952. Ken entered the Navy as an officer, honorably serving in the Korean war and discharging as a Lt. JG. He married Jane Powell, the love of his life, on Feb. 17, 1957. He graduated with a MS from University of Indiana in 1959 and went to work for Chevron Oil as a geologist/geophysicist. He would go on to work with Devon Oil and start Camberley Corporation.
Ken and Jane had 3 children; Jennifer (Dan), Bruce (Kelley) and Carol (Leon.) The family moved many times but ultimately ended up in Lakewood, CO. Ken was a member of the United Methodist Church serving in a variety of roles but he most enjoyed leading youth groups, starting a group for the homeless, and bible study/discussions. He participated in a book discussion group that has been in existence for 40 years and probably still had all the books they discussed. Ken and Jane welcomed several young people to their home, allowing many to live with them and encouraging them in life. One very special youth was Aaron Lynch, who ultimately became their 4th child.
Ken’s wife, Jane, preceded him in death in 2016. Ken has 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He leaves behind family, many friends, countless lives touched, his beloved dog, Charlie, a passion for old cars, economics, geology, ice cream, and an unbelievable number of books!
The Service for the Celebration of Life for Ken Riggs will be held on Monday, August 2nd at 2:30 pm at Applewood Valley United Methodist Church, 2035 Ellis St., Golden, CO. A private burial is planned at Crown Hill Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to a charity that means a great deal to you.
