Leonard Alford “Al” Thomas, known as Al, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 71. Born on February 26, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Al lived a life marked by mystery, curiosity, dedication, and a deep spiritual faith.
In his early years, Al attended the University of Utah, where he graduated with a degree in Biology in 1975, thanks to an ROTC scholarship. Though he pursued legal studies at Pepperdine Law School and Denver University Law School and successfully passed the bar, Al chose not to practice law, instead forging a unique career path that reflected his eclectic interests and unorthodox approach to life.
Al was known for his strong will and pedantic nature, qualities that he carried into his various roles throughout his career. His curiosity and self-driven spirit often led him to explore new avenues, while his sensitivity and devotion to family remained constant. Al was particularly committed to his parents, serving as his mother’s primary caregiver for many years, showcasing his deep sense of responsibility and love.
In 1974, Al experienced a brief marriage to Susan Brooks in Casper, a chapter in his life that contributed to the tapestry of experiences that defined him. Though his marriage was short, his relationships with family and friends left lasting impressions on those who knew him, helping those around him love better and more deliberately as a result.
Surviving family include: brother, Nelson B. Thomas, sister, Janet A. Thomas Rocha, sister, Madeleine M. Thomas Weller (Ron L. Weller), and Michael Edward Thomas. His family remembers him as an enigmatic figure whose life, though complex, taught them invaluable lessons about love and appreciation for one another.
A private funeral service to honor Al’s life will be held on April 2nd at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. In reflecting on Al's life, we are reminded of his unique ability to bring people together in unexpected ways. His legacy is one of mystery and complexity, and his absence is deeply noted by all who knew him. May he rest in the loving peace of Christ in the next life.
