Louise Schmidt

Louise Gerriets Schmidt was born April 20, 1929, in Clay Center, Kansas, to Theodor and Emma (Buck) Gerriets. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the public schools in Clay Center, graduated from Clay County Community High School, and worked in the savings and loan office there upon graduation.

She and Don G. Schmidt were united in marriage on April 9, 1950. In 1956 they moved to Denver where she held a number of positions as a secretary and accountant, and was appointed Director of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation in 1984.

She was an active member of the Wheat Ridge Evangelical Lutheran Church and valued this association very highly, especially the opportunity to sing with the choir, a ladies’ trio, and in a “barbership-style” quartet known as “The Witnesses.”

Louise suffered a heart attack on April 8, 2018, and died April 11, 2018, at the age of eighty-eight. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Schmidt, on June 27, 2015; her brothers and sisters: Alberta “Betty” Slocum, Frieda Luebbe, Theodora “Dody” Winkelmann, Eva Gerriets, Albert Gerriets, Theodor “Ted” Gerriets, and John Gerriets; and two nephews. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Gerriets; 19 nieces and nephews, and friends including Richard and Polly, Ruth, Channie, Rosemary, Mary Ann, Susie, and Heather.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to spread the Word of God or to help the sick or disabled. If any memorial donations are made to the Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church, Louise requested that they be used only for World Missions or similar mission work.
