I googled Lowell Sharp because I wanted to send him a thank you note - I'm so sorry that he has passed. I was his student in his propaganda class - I didn't take speech. I use what I learned in his class every day of my life! What I learned from him helps me navigate all the mis- and disinformation that is occurring now, and keeps me from getting emotionally hijacked like so many around me. The education chatter now is how to teach media literacy - Mr. Sharp was doing that in the late 60's! He is alive and well with me every day - I have a masters, but by far the most important and useful class I have ever taken was Mr. Sharp's propaganda class. Thank you! 

Lowell was my first-cousin-once-removed. His mother, Ruth Hunt Sharp, was the youngest sister of my grandfather, Harry Clay Hunt, of Neosho County, Kansas. Lowell was just about 8 months older than I so we sometimes played together when I visited my grandparents in Erie. If there was just the two of us we got along fine but if a  boy or two were added to the equation Lowell pretended he scarcely knew me. Once when I tagged along with him to the county fair he told me to go home because it was no place for a girl.  I treasure the memories.

I am sorry for your loss and sorry I did not reconnect with Lowell before his death. I believe we would have enjoyed a good visit with each other about Erie, Neosho County, Kansas  and the old times we shared.

Lowell Sharp was a fantastic teacher and coach.  With him, I found something I could succeed in and thanks to him, I was able to finish High School.  He is one of the reasons I am a teacher today.  He is, to this day, the model teacher I wish to become.  He took me under his wing, helped me graduate and I spent countless weekends practicing speech in a safe and motivating environment.  My thoughts, since High School, have often been with Mr. Sharp and now my thoughts are with his family as well.  He remains a mentor who will truly never be forgotten.

Mr. Sharp was one of the highlights of high school. He kept my attention and taught me far more than how to give a speech. 
I thank his family for sharing him with us.
He will be greatly missed.

There are only a few people that I  look back on as one of those people who changed the direction of my life. Sure, plenty of good teachers, smart professors, admirable bosses, etc.   For me,  it was Mr Sharp who was one of only a couple such standouts. A person where you look back and question, if I hadn’t met him, or learned from him, or perhaps  disregarded his direction, where would I be? Even after 35 years since leaving  high school, the respect and esteem I hold for Mr Sharp  still remains. He’s Mr Sharp!!

I am certain without his attention and guidance at a critical time in my life, I wouldn’t have gone down the path I did. He was honestly that person, educator, and  mentor that truly made all the difference to me. And, I’m sure I’m only one of a thousand people or more who feel the exact same way about Mr Sharp. What a legacy this one man created in a lifetime!!


Two years ago, my son (at the time a Regis Jesuit debater),  had the chance to be introduced to Mr Sharp, by me. Yes, my son met  the person as responsible as anyone  on this earth for who his father is today. Can you image how I felt? My son knew how important Mr Sharp was to me and I recall how heartfelt  it was to see them shake hands. 


I will never forget this incredible man. 

Lowell Sharp was one of those teachers who touched everyone's life!  He had such a tremendous impact on my life and I am forever grateful for everything he did for me and other students.  He deserves to be in a teacher's hall of fame!  He certainly is in mine Rhonda (Higgs) Hansch 

Lowell Sharp was an amazing man for whom my respect and admiration has stayed intact for the past 50 years. For whatever success I have had in life, I owe in large part to the role Lowell played in my orly life.  He was a father figure, a mentor and a terrific coach.  I will never forget him and what he did for his students at a critical point in their lives.  Thank you Lowell.

He was kind and patient and funny and persistent and charismatic. One of the highlights of my k-12 education. He certainly was an exceptional person and teacher. So long, Mr. Sharp.

 Lowell was a legend, not only at Golden H.S., but within the Jefferson County Public School System. His love of and skill in teaching speech won him and his students many honors. He was a good man. My sincerest condolences to his entire family.
