Martha was born outside of Arthur, Illinois into an Old Order Amish community on September 30, 1931. She was the middle child of three children and had two brothers, Jake and Harvey. Martha loved school and wanted to pursue more education. In her early 20's she made the decision to leave the Amish way of life and her family of origin to follow her dream of education. Martha started on her own as a live-in caretaker for an elderly couple in a nearby town.
She eventually moved to Sarasota, Florida and put herself through nursing school after getting her GED. Her first nursing job was in Rocky Ford, Colorado. After working a graveyard shift she was in a serious car accident that almost cost her life, but from which she eventually recovered. She later worked at Denver General Hospital and met Don Mitchell while living in Denver.
In 1966, Martha and Don were married and moved to Wheat Ridge. Martha had three daughters, Brenda, Julie and Amy. Martha enjoyed being a mother and housewife. She especially loved baking, quilting, sewing, and being involved in her church. After many years of marriage, Martha and Don divorced. Martha had four grandchildren, Mike, Danil, Levi, and Helena. Martha loved and enjoyed spending time with all her grandchildren.
Despite declining health in her later years, Martha continued to enjoy her family. She enjoyed participating in the Amish circle letter, as she was very interested in all that was happening with her family and nostalgic for her Amish home. Martha passed away from natural causes on the morning of July 7th, 2013.
