Mary Carolyn "Carrie" Bailey of Lakewood, Colorado passed peacefully at home on September 28th, 2010 after a battle with cancer at the age of 73. She was born in Steubenville, Ohio and moved to Colorado shortly before enrolling at the University of Colorado where she met her husband George.
Mary was a teacher, traveler, cook, author, astrologer, entrepreneur, and was involved in the political arena. Her degree in Speech Therapy led to teaching children in public school districts and charter schools including assistance to students with special needs.
As Mary traveled, she sampled and then created her own versions of world cuisine. She wrote "Cousin Carrie's Campus Cookbook" and "The Food Stamp Gourmet", the latter of which--as the title suggests--provides information on how to serve nutritious meals on a budget.
In the 1980's she was a candidate for Boulder City council and also led a ballot proposal to define districts for council positions.
She enjoyed ceramics and other crafts, and at various times instructed in these arts. Mary also joined her husband in various groups involved with sports car racing and rallying,
Among entrepreneurial pursuits, she owned and operated pottery, book, and antique stores in the Denver/Boulder metropolitan area.
Later in life Mary volunteered by making useful items to support veterans and children as part of the American Legion Post 178 Auxiliary. When not out dancing, she was also a proud member of Wisdom Gone Wild a senior “kitchen band” that performs at local nursing and assisted living facilities.
Mary is survived by her sister Elissa Deaton; her children Paul, James, Charlene and Valerie; four grandsons and two orange tabby cats.
An afternoon memorial service and reception will take place on Sunday, November 7th, 2010 beginning at 1:30pm
at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cemetery, 7777 West 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
On the same date there will be an evening remembrance gathering beginning at 6:30pm at Post 178, American Legion
1655 Simms Street. Lakewood, CO 80215
In lieu of flowers or other mementos it was Mary's wish for you to "go to lunch with a friend, take a child to the zoo, go dancing, or host a family gathering.”
