Mildred was born May 23, 1924 in Hamilton County, Kansas, the youngest of two children born to Earley Houston Dougherty and Rachel Carrithers Dougherty. She married Delbert Dean Ewing on December 1, 1946 in Dumas, Texas. They established a home in Edgewater, Colorado, after living briefly in Pueblo, Colorado and Oregon. They were married 38 years before Delbert’s death in 1984. One child, Robert Ewing, was born to the marriage. Robert preceded her in death in 2016. She leaves her daughter in law Lena Ewing; two grandsons, Aaron (Randi) Ewing and Jacob Ewing; three great grandchildren, Evan, Vivian, and Nolan Ewing; niece, Katherine Whiteside; nephew, Michael (Jacque) Simpson and their families with many loving memories.
Mildred grew up on a farm in western Kansas with extended family. In her adolescence, her mother married her stepfather, Cecil Crispin. The family moved to southern Colorado for a time. She graduated from high school and attended St. Katherine’s Hospital School of Nursing in Garden City, Kansas in the mid 1940’s. She left nursing school to get married, but continued to work periodically in the medical field as a doctor’s assistant and as a hospital ward clerk. She also worked as a realtor briefly. Mildred’s main priority was establishing a home for her husband and son. She had many lifelong friends and remained involved in the lives of her grandchildren and extended family after the untimely death of her husband.
Shortly before her death, Mildred celebrated her 95th birthday with extended family. She was sassy, she was stubborn. She loved celebrations, sports, a nice glass of bourbon, and a good game of Bridge. She was a tough cookie, and you never had to guess what she was thinking because by goodness, she had opinions and she definitely let you know them. She loved kids and babies. She loved to make special birthday meals and cakes. She kept a clean house, she always dressed to impress and was quite the fashionista, even at the end. We love you Nana. Rest easy now. We are grateful for the way you loved us, even if it sometimes was in your own little way. She was truly one of a kind.
