

World War II veteran and longtime Denver civil engineer Morris Alan (Al) Wolfinbarger, 94, died March 24, 2017, at Bear Creek Care Center in Morrison, Colo.
Known to everyone as Al, he was born Jan. 13, 1923 in Denver, the son of Harold and Grace (Hull) Wolfinbarger. He graduated from South High School in 1942, then entered the U.S. Army. A member of the 84th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), Wolfinbarger served in Europe from September 1944 through the end of the war in May 1945. He fought in numerous engagements, including the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Purple Heart and was recognized with a Bronze Star for valor in combat.
After his discharge in 1946, Wolfinbarger enrolled in the University of Denver where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He worked 43 years for Winslow Construction, starting in 1954 until retiring in 1997. He helped plan numerous private and public projects throughout Denver, Colorado and the region, including the Chatfield Dam and reservoir.
After marrying Frances McPike, he adopted William and Dale Wolfinbarger and fathered two other sons, Patrick and Mark. In 1973, he married Patricia Turner and was nearing their 44th anniversary in May.
A lifelong Denver resident, Wolfinbarger was a fan of area sports teams, especially the Denver Broncos. Broncos games were a focal point for family gatherings and discussions.
Wolfinbarger is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Harold Jr., John, Margaret Louise (Parkerson), Dorothy and Mary; son Dale and daughter-in-law Karen (Murphy), and stepsons Doug and Bobby Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons William, Patrick (Jane), Mark (Mary) and stepson Jim (Michelle) Turner; grandchildren Jim (Gina) Wolfinbarger, Gina (Chase) VanDyne, Lyra (Chris) Woods, Lee, Peter, Aaron, Matthew, Adam, Evan and Ryan Wolfinbarger; and great-grandchildren Mason, Makenna, Dalton, Peyton and Cora.
Chapel service will be held Friday, April 14, 10 a.m., at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, 7777 W 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, Colo. That will be followed by a motorcade to an 11:30 a.m. Military Service at Committal Shelter B, Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W Kenyon Ave., Denver, Colo. A lunch reception will be held immediately afterwards back at Olinger Crown Hill.
