Jan 17, 1930-Dec 16, 2015
Phyllis was born in La Junta Colorado, the oldest of six daughters, to Sherman C and Martha Hershey Kauffman. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Ruby Kauffman. Surviving are Fern Seibert of Post Falls ID, Mary Ellen Friesen of Fresno, CA, Shirley Sager of Glendale, AZ, and Janice Parks of Lakewood, CO. She will be missed by 12 nieces and nephews, 23 grand nieces and 1 great-grand nephew who have loved her even as she loved each of them.
After graduation from La Junta High School, she worked locally while completing a year at Otero Jr. College. Coming to Denver in 1950 she worked as an accountant/bookkeeper eventually working for a number of years for Consolidated Gas and Oil. During the mid 1960s she became interested in computers taking programming classes in night school. Equipped with the additional training in a newer field she was excited to part of the team which brought her company into the computer age. Phyllis loved travel abroad and within the US with her friends and sister Ruby. Near to home a favorite nearby destination was Estes Park. Her interests included music, singing with the church choir until her later years and many years attending the Denver Symphony. The Rockies were clearly her favorite team. For at least 10 years she attended a number or afternoon games with Ruby even when the wins were not outnumbering the losses. When unable to attend the TV broadcasts were available and turned on. Phyllis loved life, loved being with people.
Phyllis’ caring and generous spirit, so much a part of her even as a child, was expressed throughout her life. Central Presbyterian of downtown Denver was central to her faith and life. Here she volunteered 40 years in church service. Her concern and love for the disadvantaged whether from disability, disease or poverty was expressed in the volunteer work with Metro- Caring.
The Celebration of Life for Phyllis Evelyn Kauffman will be held at 1PM, January 23, 2016, at Central Presbyterian Church, 1660 Sherman St. A reception will follow. Parking is available in the lot and in a nearby bank parking structure. Donations to the church or to Metro-Caring are requested in place of flowers.
