His story began January 11, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended New Haven High School in New Haven, Indiana. He was a gifted athlete and played basketball, threw the javelin and discus for track, and was awarded a scholarship to college for baseball. He caddied during the summer for extra money and fell in love with the game of golf. He moved to Colorado with a job offer from Hager Hinge in 1968 to be their sales manager for the Rocky Mountain Region. Thus began an over 50 year career in the door, frame, and hardware industry.
Dick was an active member at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden, Colorado for almost 50 years where he met many friends that he had until death. His greatest love was golfing with them, and Wednesday night poker games. Dick loved to travel. One of his greatest adventures was his trip to China. He loved being at his second home in Venice, Florida and bringing friends to play gold at his country club there.
Dick was a loving son. He did everything he could to make sure his parents lived a wonderful life including paying all of their bills, sending them on trips, and buying them an oceanfront home. He was preceded in death by his parents Cliff and Betty Gheen, losing his mother only 10 months ago.
He was a father to four daughters he loved very much, Pamela Herman of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Rick) Hoffman of Chicago, Jill (Adam) Price of Castle Rock, and Stacey (Mark) James of Salt Lake City. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren, Zachary (Holly) Hoffman, Zane Hoffman, Jordan Price, Alexander Price, Sarah James, Hannah James, Stephen James, Daniel James, Michael James, and Rebekah James. He was blessed to have become a great grandfather twice to Caleb Burnett and Penelope Hoffman.
His journey on earth ended surrounded by his daughters on March 6, 2017 at the Denver Hospice.
