Richard A. Jost was born in Denver and lived always in the Denver area to the age of 82. He was a graduate of East High School, earned a BS in Chemistry and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Denver. He was admitted to the Colorado Bar Association, the Federal District Court, and the U. S. Supreme Court. Dick’s career included Analytical Chemist for the Food and Drug Administration, Deputy District Attorney, private law practice, Assistant United States Attorney, and Corporate Counsel for FDIC. After retirement, he served as counsel for the Mayflower Society for many years. His favorite work stories were of his younger years delivering newspapers by bicycle and “digging ditches” for Public Service utility lines.
He was a devoted husband and father, frequently asking, “how can I help?” or offering to “tote and fetch” something in the VW bus. He was an avid coach and fan of his children’s sporting events. He was always ready to play with his kids, soccer in the backyard or basketball on the driveway. He taught his family to ski at Loveland Ski Area, on the same slopes where he learned from paratroopers (or so the story went). He was full of knowledge on every topic, like how to improve the garden soil with rototilled grass-clippings, how to apply leverage to lift something impossibly heavy or how to diagnose and fix an errant car. He saved everything that might one day prove useful (the day has yet to come for most of it). He was always ready with a one-liner and a laugh. We will most miss his sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Kay Jost, his son Andrew, his daughter Rebecca Figaro, four grandchildren, and sisters Evelyn “Sally” Nix, Marion “Mitzi” Zellner, and Patricia Parks. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Theron and Neth Jost.
His family plans a private memorial. For those who want to honor his memory, please consider donations in his name to your favorite charity, or remember him in your own way, thinking of your experiences with him, especially fun and humorous ones.
