Robert Moir Woodbury passed away peacefully on the morning of February 17, 2020 at the age of 78. Robert,“Bob”, was the second child of Perry and Nancy Woodbury. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 11, 1941. He and his sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) lived much of their childhood in Chappaqua, NY. Bob graduated from Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY.
Bob attended the Colorado School of Mines, where he earned a professional degree as an Engineer of Mines. At Mines, Bob was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and played tackle on the varsity football team. Of ATO, Bob would fondly relate: “I drove onto campus without a place to stay. It looked like there was a party going on at the ATO house, so I parked my car and stayed.”
At Mines Bob also joined the ROTC. Upon graduation, he enlisted as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Bob served in active duty as an Engineer Officer from 1965 thru 1968. He completed a tour afloat with the sixth fleet and a tour in Viet Nam. Bob served in the reserves until 1972, when he received an honorary discharge as a Captain.
Prior to shipping out for his tours of duty, Bob married his college sweetheart, Carole. Over the course of their 53 year marriage, they raised three daughters, Barbara, Karen and Tracy.
Bob’s career as a mining engineer took the family back and forth across the United States. He held managerial positions at rock quarries in Las Vegas, NV; Salida, CO; Rockland, MI, North Adams, MA, and Paso Robles, Cool and San Rafael, California. One of Bob’s crowning professional achievements was his role as “Master blaster” and manager of marine drilling for the “Big Dig”, the Central Artery / Tunnel project in Boston, MA. Bob retired from Dutra Group in San Rafael, California in 2003
Bob was not “good” at retirement. He and Carole returned to Colorado permanently in 2003 where they split their time between Golden and Silverthorne. There he continued to work as an Industrial Mineral Consultant until his death. In addition, Bob pursued commercial contracts for the Commerce City Ace Hardware, a business founded by Carole’s father Jerry. The business has been owned by members of the family since the 1940’s.
Bob’s love of fishing, hunting, camping, sports (especially football, skiing and golf), and travel is a legacy that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Bob and Carole shared many international adventures together. An avid football fan, Bob shared season tickets to the Denver Broncos. On any given Saturday he could be found at Marv K Stadium in Golden, cheering for his beloved Orediggers along with his fellow alumni. Bob was as devoted to the family dogs as they were to him.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, his niece, Colleen, and his granddaughter, Helena. He is survived by his wife Carole, and sister Elizabeth, as well as his daughters and their families: Barb, Paul and their daughter Grace Mei; Karen, Aaron, and their children Madeline and Ethan; Tracy, Tim and their children Jacob, Emmaline and Jonathan. Uncle Bob will be missed by his ten nieces and nephews, their spouses and kids.
Please join the family at Fort Logan Cemetery where Robert Moir Woodbury will be interred on February 27, 2020 at 11:15. Celebration of life to follow at 1:30pm at the home of Tracy and Tim Zaleski, 3711 Overlook Trail, Evergreen Colorado.
