Stuart was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He grew up in New Albany, Indiana and attended New Albany High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He earned his master’s degree from Harvard University and received an award for outstanding teaching.
Stuart lived in many places, including Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, and a brief stint working on a tugboat in New Orleans. He spent the last five and a half years in the Boulder, Colorado area. He was always on the lookout for the next great trail, hiking with friends, family, and dogs as often as he could.
Stuart is survived by his children, Sam and Ellery, his mother, Susan Clayton-Evans, his sister, Laura Thornhill, and her three sons, Denton White, Drew White, and Brady Thornhill. He was preceded in death by his father, William Eugene “Gene” Clayton.
The family will hold a celebration of life when the time is right.
