Susan Kay Walker Bicknell, 72, of Broomfield, Colo. passed away December 15, 2018. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Reid; her two children, Laura (Esmelin) Espinal and Brian (Cora) Bicknell; two sisters, Lynn Barczuk and Ann Walker; three grandchildren with one on the way; and seven nieces and nephews.
Susan was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. to Robert and Janis Walker on October 27, 1946. The family moved to Denver in 1950 and then to Wheat Ridge in 1953. Susan graduated from Wheat Ridge High School and went on to attend the University of Colorado, where she met her husband, Reid. After graduation from CU in 1968 Susan became an elementary school teacher. She first taught in the St. Vrain School District in Longmont and then in Greenville, Mississippi. where she and Reid had moved in 1972. After three years in Mississippi they returned to Denver where Susan taught until the children were born, at which time she stopped teaching and became a full time Mom. Building on her experience as a former, very active, Camp Fire Girl and camp counselor she enthusiastically volunteered in the children’s schools, became a Girl Scout troop leader, helped with swim teams, church youth groups, and PTA.
The family moved to Houston, Texas. in 1995 where Susan advanced her education and became a licensed drug and alcohol counselor. After the family returned to Denver in 1998, she and a partner founded a business, Court Counseling of Lakewood, which she ran until she retired in 2012.
Susan enjoyed traveling, reading, various art hobbies, gardening and doing jigsaw puzzles, including once, a 10,000 piece puzzle.
Susan was a terrific mother, beloved wife, devoted daughter and sister and cherished friend to many.
A private memorial service for the family will be held Saturday, December 29.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
