Virgil L. Miller. 70, passed away on February 12, 2021. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 8, 1950 to Robert Miller, Sr. and Willie Mae Thomas Miller. He was the oldest of 7 children. Virgil married Maxine Lena Gomez on August 1, 1987—they were together for a total of 46 years (12 prior to their wedding). Virgil was blessed with one daughter, Connie Miller, and a grandson, Evan Jenkins. Surviving him are his siblings (Pamela Sue Flythe 'Carl', Beverly Jean McKaig 'Kevin', Robert Miller, Jr. 'Judy', Donna Marie Pazuchanics and Dexter Lynn Miller). A sister died in infancy. He leaves to mourn countless nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Virgil graduated from Hutchison High School in 1969. He continued his education at the Community College of Hutchison where he received his Associates Degree in Automotive Technology in 1972. Although he was a skilled automobile mechanic, his real passion was working on motorcycles. His Harley Davidson was his pride and joy.
Virgil was a martial arts Go Ju Ru sixth-degree Black Belt. He and his wife Lena met at karate in 1974. Together they taught classes over a span of 38 years starting at Red Shield Community Center, Edgewater Community Center and opened their own martial arts school in West Denver. Countless young people and police officers owe their skill to his training. He was dedicated to his students, whether they pursued martial arts or kickboxing he was the man to have in your corner. More important than the actual physical training, he taught his students that having power in their bodies and mind must also come with respect and passion to use their strengths to contribute to their families and society as a whole. Virgil was dedicated and cared deeply.
Virgil was loved by all his extended family, especially the children, teenagers and young adults who called him grandpa or uncle. Not one of them ever wanted to disappoint him by making foolish decisions. He led by example and never used drugs or alcohol. When he became aware of a mistake that a person made, he never said anything, but the miscreant usually got a kick in the seat of their pants as Uncle Virgil went by, or he pulled them aside for a ‘chat’. For our family youngsters disappointing Uncle Virgil was more painful than any kick.
We know Virgil is in heaven, not suffering and happy. He’s in martial arts heaven and riding his hog across the heavens. We will miss you, Virgil. Watch over us.
A celebration of life will be announced and posted here as well as FaceBook sent individually not publicly posted.
