Vicki Collette Gritters peacefully passed on the evening of October 14, 2020 at her home in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by her husband of 59 years Harry Donald Gritters of Denver, Colorado and sons Donald Gritters (Margaret) of Denver, Colorado and Edward Gritters (Karie) of Colorado Springs, Colorado along with six grandchildren Jason (Erika) Gritters, Kevin (Andrea) Gritters, Katie (Keith) Birlson, all from Denver, Colorado, Kacey Gritters from New York, NY, Molly (Jordan) Eyer and Emily Gritters from Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Landon and Holden Gritters (Jason and Erika) and Holly Gritters (Kevin and Andrea), plus future baby boy Eyer due in January (Jordan and Molly).
Vicki married her high school love in 1961 and was blessed with a marriage of 59 years. Don and Vicki had two boys while living in Illinois and moved to Colorado in 1972. In 1994 they embarked on a move to Del Rio, Texas where they made a wonderful life for over 6 years before returning to Colorado to be with family and enjoy retirement.
While professionally she was very proud of her work as a dental assistant and later in HR for Purotator Armored Car, her passion in life, without a doubt, was her family. Be it as a young wife and mother, moving a family to a new city, or watching the next generation arrive, she always delivered positive and loving care to the family. One of her greatest joys was watching her grandchildren grow. Each knew their Grandma was there as a permanent cheerleader for whatever they endeavored. She affectionately coined her grandkids the “Gritters Critters” and frequently taught simple yet valuable lessons. Hosting Sunday pot roast lunch for the entire family is not only a memory that will last forever but a pillar of which her close and loving family was built upon.
The noble story of Vicki reveals itself through all of her service in churches, volunteer organizations, neighborhood groups, and other fellowship events. She had a welcoming heart and willingness to give – this fit perfectly for serving and fellowshipping which she routinely did. She was always ready to bring a meal to an event, spread the word about something, or simply show compassion to anyone that attended the gathering. Whether it was with her original church family from Trinity (relationships that lasted decades), serving as a Deacon, a member of St. Andrews Church, Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out, Chalet’s, Father Ed Judy House, etc. she made Denver a better place to live. Being in Del Rio proved no different, she got involved with Maquila Wives, Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Tours and even operated the juice and candy service at the hospital. She truly loved being part of an organization and spending time around people!
Condolences are being directed to Don and Margaret’s house at 5724 S. Everett Way, Littleton, CO 80123 and any phone calls are welcomed to both Don and Ed at 303-748-1304, 719-244-2181 or [email protected]
Let us all learn from Vicki’s example by reflecting on the importance of being an active member of a community through volunteerism and fellowship, as well as being a loving supporter of everyone in your family...no matter what.
