Ed's life was one marked by devotion, joy, and an unwavering faith. Ed's journey began as a bright-eyed child in Detroit, where he attended Our Lady Queen of Peace for grade school, instilling in him early on the values of community and spirituality. He furthered his education at Austin Catholic School, where he not only earned his diploma but also shone as a baseball player, demonstrating the teamwork and sportsmanship that would become a hallmark of his life.
In adulthood, Ed's career flourished as he became a respected district manager for Arrow Linens, where he was known for his strong work ethic and amiable personality. His retirement from the company was the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with the leisure activities he so cherished. Ed's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He lived his life as a testament to his beliefs, a passionate and faith-filled man whose actions spoke as loudly as his words. His love for God was evident in his commitment to his church and the support he provided to his community. The love story between Ed and his beloved wife, Pamela, was one for the ages. Married on January 24, 2003, in the beautiful setting of Maui, Hawaii, they shared a bond that was as deep as it was joyful. Together, they enjoyed the pleasures of travel, finding a special retreat in their winter home in Arizona. Ed enjoyed visiting with his friend's Linda Glorfield, Rick Lustik Evy and Jim Heath.
Ed's love for Pam was paralleled only by his dedication to his family. A dear father to Kim Hunsaker, Ted (Dawn) Butkiewicz, Theresa (Mark) Rheker, Kim (Mike) Kove, Jamie Burden, and the late Scott Butkiewicz, Ed instilled in his children the values of love, integrity, and perseverance. His role as a grandfather to Rachel (Michael) Hoffman, Brandon Hunsaker, Dylan Rheker, and Amber (Nate) Nuyts, and as a great grandfather to Cadence, Christian, Nevaeh, Ashton, Zaiden, Savannah, and the late Gregory Haigh, was one he cherished with every ounce of his being. Ed's siblings, Marilyn Butkiewicz, Patty Oliver, and the late Larry Leon, knew him as a devoted brother and a steadfast presence in their lives. As the godfather of Charlie and uncle of Brian (Laura) Ezyk, great-uncle of Nicholas Ezyk, his guidance and support were unwavering. Ed was preceded in death by his parent's Edward and Sally (nee Kostera), and his mother-inlaw, June.
An avid and amazing golfer, Ed's prowess on the green was matched by his skill as a lights-out bowler. He found camaraderie and competition in league play, and his passion for these sports was infectious. A culinary enthusiast, Ed was the family's revered grill master, known especially for his mouthwatering split pea soup. His love for cooking was a way for him to express his love for those around him. Ed's zest for life extended to his enjoyment of the Hazel Park Race Track and his talent as a great dancer. He moved through life with a rhythm that was uniquely his own, bringing smiles and laughter to those who had the pleasure of joining him on the dance floor.
Edward Thomas Butkiewicz was a man described by many as passionate, faith-filled, and friendly. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family and faith. As we bid farewell to Ed, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless memories he leaves behind. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, as we hold him dear in our hearts forever.
